As the result of a project spearheaded by Paul Ricketts and Sharon Molica, the Ansonia Theatre was donated in 1995 to the Anson County Arts Council by Jack and Judy Poulnott subject to the outstanding mortgage. The Anson County Arts Council has now realized its goal of restoring this theatre as a central location for the arts and cultural expression in our county. The project has focused on historic preservation since the Ansonia is one of the few Vaudeville theatres still remaining in the United States.
A grand opening celebration is in the planning stages, but several performances have already taken place in the Ansonia:
Bright Star Touring Theatre presented a play on the Underground Railroad for students
Renowned poet Glenis Redmond presented a program of poetry which included poems of local high school students created in a workshop with Ms. Redmond earlier that day
Bright Star Touring Theatre returned to present a play on North Carolina history to an audience of middle school students and their parents
Charlotte Children's Theatre's Tarradiddle Players presented If You Take a Mouse to School for young students and their parents, with both a morning and an evening performance
The Ansonia's first concert featured local performers. Thirteen-year-old singer/songwriter Carson Hill along with Matthew Gibson, who is currently working on his second album, Roy Orbison tribute artist Tony King, and the newly-formed community group The Anson Singers performed for a full house.
This month recording artist Tim Hildebrandt will perform songs from his latest CD Hombres, accompanied by percussionist Robert Hudson, bassist Paul Westlake, guitarist Joanne Martin, and keyboardist Russell Rogers.
