THEATRE Update as of April 2011
|
As the result of a project spearheaded by Paul Ricketts and Sharon Molica, the Ansonia Theatre was donated in 1995 to the Anson County Arts Council by Jack and Judy Poulnott subject to the outstanding mortgage. The mortgage was retired with equal contributions from the Yost Foundation and the Smith Trust. Since then the Anson County Arts Council has planned and worked toward the renovation of the historic Ansonia Theatre.
The Anson County Arts Council has now realized its goal of restoring this theatre as a central location for the arts and cultural expression in our county. The project has focused on historic preservation since the Ansonia is one of the few Vaudeville theatres still remaining in the United States.
Since letters first went up on the marquee in February, Bright Star Touring Theatre has presented a play for students on the Underground Railroad, renowned poet Glenis Redmond presented a program of poetry which included the poems of local high school students created during a workshop with Ms. Redmond earlier in the day, Bright Star Touring Theatre returned to present a play on North Carolina history to an audience of middle school students and their parents, and Charlotte Children's Theatre's Tarradiddle Players presented "If You Take a Mouse to School" for young students and their parents, with both a morning and an evening performance.
Plans are in the works for future events, including a performing artists concert and reception featuring local performers on Sunday, May 22. A grand opening is also being planned. We hope that you will visit the Ansonia, enjoy the performances there, and take pride in this new addition to Anson County's cultural scene.
